The Mechanik, re-titled The Russian Specialist in the United States, is a foreign action film written by Bryan Edward Hill, directed by and starring Dolph Lundgren. A Russian Spetnaz hit man retired from the job tries of a special agent tries to instill some semblance of peace and tranquility into his life for once. In a tiny Russian village, Nikolai "Nick" Cherenko played by Dolph Lundgren trains as an automobile mechanic and falls in love with the beautiful Alina (Hilda van der Meulen). They marry and have a son together, Vanya (Naum Shopov). It seems that Nick has finally been blessed with what he was looking for in this small town in the middle of nowhere. One day, a local mob boss and his gang, Sasha Popov (Ivan Petrushinov), roar into town and an ensuing gunfight slaughters Alina and Vanya in front of a helpless Nickolai. Swearing vengeance, Nick single handedly tracks down Sasha and his men and takes them down. Several years later, Nick has immigrated to the United States. There, he continues to work as an auto-mechanic in Los Angeles, California, forgetting his past troubles and settling in to an uneventful existence. Until Mary Abramoff (Levana Finkelstein) appears, having tracked Nick down specifically for his special ops training to beg him to rescue her kidnapped daughter. Nick cannot refuse when he sees who is behind the abduction: Sasha Popov, somehow alive. Arriving in St. Petersburg, Nickolai calls for assistance with a band of mercenaries to help him take down Sasha. With more weapons than they know what to do with, and a strategic battle plan, the mercenaries prepare for a frontal assault on Sasha before Mary's daughter disappears into the sex trade underground never to be seen again. It all culminates in a face off between two foes who have crossed oceans to face each other a second time.
