The Spy In Black is a World War I espionage thriller film released in 1939, directed by Michael Powell and starring Conrad Veidt, Valerie Hobson, and Sebastian Shaw. The movie is set in the Orkney Islands in Scotland in 1917, where the German U-Boat Commander Captain Hardt (Veidt) has been tasked with infiltrating the British navy base in Scapa Flow.

The film opens with Captain Hardt's submarine reaching the Orkney Islands and dropping off a spy named Lt. Ashington (Shaw) on the coast. Ashington is tasked with gathering intelligence on the British Navy's movements and reporting back to Hardt. Ashington poses as a schoolteacher and receives assistance from a local schoolmistress, Lisa (Hobson), who is unaware of his true mission.

Captain Hardt, now disguised as a clergyman, arrives on the Island and quickly establishes contact with Lt. Ashington. The two spies communicate through signals from the island's lighthouse. However, Ashington's cover is compromised, and he is captured by the British navy. Captain Hardt risks everything to rescue Ashington, and the two of them continue their mission.

As the two spies continue their work, a romantic connection begins to form between Ashington and Lisa. Hardt becomes increasingly concerned that Ashington's newfound feelings for Lisa could jeopardize their mission, especially when Ashington is ordered to lead a group of ships into the treacherous waters of the North Sea.

The movie builds tension as German and British naval forces close in on each other, threatening to ignite a confrontation that could cost countless lives. As the situation becomes increasingly dire, it becomes clear that Ashington's loyalty to his country may not be as absolute as Capt. Hardt would want it to be.

Throughout the film, Conrad Veidt delivers a masterful performance as Capt. Hardt, a man torn between his loyalty to his homeland and his growing feelings for Lisa. Veidt gives the character a sense of depth and complexity, making it clear that Hardt is not simply a heartless villain but a man with real emotional struggles.

Valerie Hobson, playing the role of Lisa, is equally impressive. She is believable as a woman caught between her loyalty to her country and her growing feelings for Ashington. Shaw, meanwhile, is convincing as a man who becomes increasingly conflicted about his role in the mission.

The Spy in Black is a suspenseful and engaging film that offers a unique perspective on espionage during the First World War. The film does an excellent job of building tension and bringing its characters to life, making it a must-see for fans of classic cinema.

The Spy In Black is a 1939 thriller with a runtime of 1 hour and 17 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.9.
