The Triumph of Love
- 1 hr 52 min
The Triumph of Love is based on a 1732 play. The comedy was directed by Clare Peploe and has a host of readily recognizable stars, including Mira Sorvino and Ben Kingsley. The plot centers around an unnamed European country in the 1700s. A woman has ascended to the throne and comes from a family that is at best disingenuous and at worst murderous. Unlike the rest of her family, she desires to do the right thing. After she learns that there is a biological heir named Agis that is staying with a philosopher she goes to see him and finds him bathing in a stream. She falls in love with him at first sight. The rest of the film is spent trying to get close to Agis, which is made difficult because he has been taught by his philosopher caretaker to hate and despise all women. The latter part of the plot is centered around the bribes, deceptions and other difficult situations that the female ruler gets herself into as she tries to get close to Agis.
