H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds is a classic science fiction movie that debuted on August 26th, 1953 and stars Gene Berry and Ann Robinson. It is not only a part of the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress but it also won an Academy Award for its special effects. The movie starts when what is believed to be a meteorite crashes near a small southern Californian town. Dr. Clayton Forrester, a scientist vacationing near the crash site, and Sylvia Van Buren, a pastor's niece, meet at the location with others to observe the large object. Within 24 hours the object is found out to be not just a simple meteorite but rather three spaceships that carry hostile aliens from the planet Mars. It is later discovered that several spaceships have been spotted around the world and that the Martians have begun an all out attack on Earth. The military tries valiantly to strike back but to no avail, the Martians not only have technologically advanced weapons but impenetrable defenses as well. This movie shows what humankind is willing to do to survive as well as how far the Martians go in conquering the planet Earth.
