The Woman in Red is about the obsessive minded San Francisco resident Teddy Pierce portrayed by Gene Wilder. Happily married to Didi, Teddy's thoughts continuously wonder to Charlote, the woman in red, a woman he noticed on the street as she walked over a grate and her red dress flew over her head.

Completely obsessed, Teddy does all he can to cross paths with Charlotte and be social with her. Encouraged by friends, he changes the way he dresses and makes elaborate plans to be wherever she is. A third woman, Ms. Milner, is introduced into the story when Teddy mistakenly asks her on a date, then stands her up.
