Conspiracy Theory is a 1997 film that stars Julia Roberts, Mel Gibson and Patrick Stewart. Mel Gibson portrays a man named Jerry who acts paranoid and has many conspiracy theories. He is a taxi driver in New York City and is obsessed with a woman who works at the Justice Department who is named Alice. Alice is portrayed by Julia Roberts. Alice’s father was murdered and she tries to find out who did it. Jerry is someone who is being pursued by the CIA. They kidnap, torture, and interrogate him while he is on LSD. He escapes after biting the doctor’s nose and runs to Alice’s office. He is then taken to the hospital where he gets handcuffed by the bed and put to sleep. Alice decides to switch his chart with another patient’s after Jerry pleads with her to do so. He knows that he will be killed if she does not take action. The next day, the man whose chart she changed died of an alleged heart attack which legitimizes Jerry’s suspicions. He then escapes the hospital. Later on, Dr. Jonas talks to Alice about Jerry. She states that Jerry saved her life once and that she has allowed him to be around her ever since because of that fateful encounter. The CIA tries to hunt down Jerry but he is hiding in the back seat of Alice’s car. Alice decides to go to Jerry’s apartment with him and he explains his conspiracy theories and shows her a newsletter that he created. The CIA tracks him down so he sets his place on fire. The movie continues on with Jerry trying to escape the CIA. He admits to Alice that an assassin killed her father and that he had been friends with him after he was sent to kill him. The movie ends with Jerry faking his death.
