In the film, Ed Harris was married to Susan Sarandon when they divorced. Jackie and Luke who were once married went through a divorce that was especially difficult on the children. The two of them struggle when Luke becomes involved with Isabel who is younger than Jackie. Anna and Ben who are the children are in the middle of the divorce and feel that if they like Isabel they have betrayed their mother. It becomes increasingly hard for the children to resent Isabel as the movie goes on. During the beginning of the movie, the movie focuses on the fact that Jackie has cancer. She will begin treatments that are aimed at slowing or curing the cancer. Once she begins treatments, she is informed that she has no chance of recovering. Once she learns this, she aims to help the kids become comfortable with their stepmom. Isabel is at the home one day after picking Ben up from a party when she realizes that some of the mail has been left on the stand. She looks through the mail where she discovers some tickets out of town. She confronts Jackie where she is then informed of the cancer. Jackie and Luke must work together to help the children cope with the fact that their mother is going to die. The children are informed and become upset that they will be facing the death of their mother. The children will then try to spend as much time as they can with their mother. Isabel is hired by Jackie to take photographs of the kids to use on special gifts that will be given to the kids later on. Once Jackie and Isabel begin working on the photographs, the friendship starts to blossom. Once this happens, the movie then moves on to what is impending for Jackie. The movie is a drama that is sad in some areas and funny in others.
