A seamless blending of giant monster movie and creature features, Tremors features actors like Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward and Victor Wong. A cult classic that's had a variety of sequels, many of which have been direct to video, it maintains a solid following and a presence in pop culture. The film starts in a small town called Perfection in Nevada. Two local handymen, Valentine (Bacon) and Earl (Ward) decide to make a run for the next town over to escape their working poor existence in a town with only 14 residents. However, they discover a dead man up an electrical pole, and that discovery is followed by the severed head of one of their neighbors, along with his truck pulled down and buried in the desert sands. Next to vanish is a road crew, leaving the highway out of the valley impassable. It seems like a world gone mad, until they find evidence of what's doing it all: giant, subterranean creatures drawn to vibration. They're hungry, and the residents of this little valley are in a life and death fight for their lives against what feels like a prehistoric foe. A survival horror film from before zombies were cool again, the residents have to band together to find a way out of the valley without getting eaten. Fortunately with half-crazy survivalists Burt Gummer (Michael Gross) and Heather Gummer (Reba Mcentire) there's plenty of firepower to go round. All they have to do is figure out how to stay alive and above ground long enough to get these things before the things get them. An unusual combination of crypto-zoology, fears of the underground and the survival instincts of people willing to improvise plans of mayhem, Tremors is one of those films that nearly everyone interested in science fiction or horror pop culture has seen. Even if they haven't watched the many sequels, of whom the only constantly recurring character is the survivalist Burt Gummer, the first film at least is filed away.
