Heart and Souls is a 1993 fantasy-comedy film directed by Ron Underwood and starring Robert Downey Jr., Charles Grodin, Alfre Woodard, and Kyra Sedgwick. The film follows the story of four different individuals who died in a bus crash in 1959 and had their souls trapped to fulfill a promise they made to a baby boy named Thomas, who became their friend just before they suddenly died.

In the present-day, Thomas (played by Thomas Byrd), who is now a grown-up businessman living in San Francisco, is struggling to cope with the four souls who keep appearing to him at different times in a day. Each of the four characters represents a different personality that leads to humorous and emotional scenes throughout the film.

Harrison (Charles Grodin) is a man who was hesitant of his artist aspirations and instead became a corporate businessman. He is the first soul to appear in front of Thomas and makes him late for a meeting, which leads to conflicts with his colleagues. Penny (Alfre Woodard) is a single mother who dreamed of becoming a singer but had to leave her ambitions behind to take care of her son. She appears to Thomas while he is on a date and tries to help him realize what love truly is. Julia (Kyra Sedgwick) is a young woman who is always energetic, and her passion for life draws Thomas closer to her. Lastly, Milo (Tom Sizemore) is a trouble-maker, who is Thomas’s biological father, and the thing that binds these characters together is their promise to watch over him from the other side of life.

All of the four souls who appear to Thomas have unfinished business while they were alive, and due to their death being untimely, they want Thomas to fulfill that promise they made to him, so that they can move on to the afterlife. The only way that they can be set free is when Thomas helps them complete the tasks they couldn’t handle before their death.

As the film progresses, Thomas starts to develop a bond with each of the four souls, and he realizes that their presence is meant to teach him important life lessons. The souls guide Thomas at different points of his life, advising him on love, career, and life's purpose. This film explores a lot of themes that resonate with everyone, such as purpose and pursuing ambition in life, love and family, letting go of the past, and living life to the fullest.

Robert Downey Jr. delivers an excellent performance as Thomas, and his chemistry with the four souls is impressive. Although his character still struggles to believe in the existence of the souls that keep bothering him, his interactions with Charles Grodin, Alfre Woodard, Kyra Sedgwick, and Tom Sizemore give depth to the storyline and keep the audience engaged until the end.

Heart and Souls is a heartwarming film that is both amusing and moving. It has a well-written script that balances the comedy and drama in a way that will make you laugh and cry. The film’s musical score is beautifully composed by Marc Shaiman, adding a soulful and emotional touch to it.

Overall, Heart and Souls is an entertaining and touching film that explores the human condition in a unique way with its imaginative storytelling. It is a film that will make you appreciate your life and the people around you. It is highly recommended for anyone who loves a good comedy with a touching message at its core.
