The Outsider is romantic western drama film that was written by Jenny Wingfield and directed by Randa Haines. Featuring Tim Daly and Naomi Watts, the movie is based upon a novel by Penelope Williamson. The story takes place in 1880s Montana and concerns a young widow with a son who are befriended by a gunfighter named Johnny Gault (played by Tim Daly) who arrives at their doorstep bleeding after a terrible gunfight. Rebecca Yoder (played by Naomi Watts) is part of a small religious band called the Plain People. Their belief system involves a very simple, faith based lifestyle. Rebecca’s husband was unjustly lynched by a cattle baron named Noah Weaver (played by Keith Carradine) which has left her a widow. Because the Plain People own a great deal of land, they have become targets in numerous efforts to illegally take it from them. As time goes on, Rebecca develops a growing interest in Johnny while nursing him back to health. However, there is a lot of conflict since Johnny does not want to conform to the rules of the Plain People. One of the main rules being broken is that Rebecca even has him in her house, given that they are not married. Though Rebecca does employ him to help with the ranch, the Plain People do not approve of Johnny. Despite this, Rebecca and Johnny fall in love. Unfortunately, Johnny has a sordid past as a murderer. But as payment for Rebecca saving his life, he offers to confront the cattle baron who seeks to take away her property. Because it would be against her belief system, Rebecca declines the offer as it would be immoral for Johnny to harm the cattle baron. She continues to develop very strong feelings for him and begins to question whether it is wise to live this repressive lifestyle. Meanwhile, ranchers in the area go after Johnny, intending to murder him.
