The General is a crime thriller that tells the true story of Martin Cahill. Cahill was a crime boss in Dublin, Ireland who leads a gang in a serious of daring heists during the 1980’s. Cahill is very intelligent and he becomes a bit of a modern-day folk hero in Ireland. He outwits the police at every turn and the public seems to be amused by his skills. Cahill was very charismatic and the media covered him as if he was some type of Robin Hood. Although Cahill achieved a legendary status during his time, he committed some brutal crimes and the film does not shy away from showing them. One time, he was so furious with a member of his gang that he physically nailed him to a pool table. He also set off car bombs to injure law enforcement officials. He even broke into the house of a government official to torture him as well. He also tries to buy off the daughter of one of his gang members, knowing that she has been sexually abused. The conflict between Cahill’s seemingly attractive personality and his deplorable crimes is one of the main focuses of the film. Cahill’s own wife was so enamored with him that she suggested the couple have a threesome with her sister. Cahill also has the total allegiance of all of his gang members despite his brutal nature and the media covers his exploits as if he is some kind of rock star. Cahill’s actions also bring him to the attention of the Irish Republican Army, a terrorist group. The IRA tries to recruit Cahill to their cause and give them some of the spoils of his crimes but he refuses. The IRA does not like to take no for an answer so they launch an assassination plot against Cahill. The plot is successful and Cahill is killed.
