Vishwa Thulasi is a 2004 Indian Malayalam-language drama film directed by Sumathy Ram. The film revolves around the lives of Viswanathan (Mammootty) and Thulasi (Nandita Das). Viswanathan is a rich businessman who is respected by the people around him. His only child, a son, died when he was just eight years old. He and his wife were unable to have any more children, which has left Viswanathan with a sense of emptiness he cannot seem to shake. Thulasi is a simple, yet strong-willed woman who works as a nurse. She has had a difficult life, but has never lost hope.
Viswanathan and Thulasi cross paths when he is admitted to the hospital where she works due to a heart attack. Thulasi takes care of him and the two form a close bond. Viswanathan begins to find solace in Thulasi's company and eventually decides to adopt her as his daughter. This move is opposed by Viswanathan's sister-in-law and her son, who see Thulasi as a threat to their inheritance.
As Viswanathan and Thulasi grow closer, their relationship is threatened by Viswanathan's past. He had an affair with a woman named Madhavi (Seema Biswas) before he married his wife, and Madhavi's son, Kuttappan (Manoj K. Jayan), returns seeking revenge. Kuttappan is determined to destroy the relationship between Viswanathan and Thulasi, and he will do whatever it takes to accomplish his goal.
Throughout the film, the characters struggle with their pasts and present, trying to make sense of their lives and their relationships. Viswanathan must come to terms with his past mistakes, Thulasi must decide what is most important to her, and Kuttappan must confront the anger and bitterness that have consumed him.
The performances in Vishwa Thulasi are outstanding. Mammootty delivers a powerful and nuanced performance as Viswanathan, perfectly capturing the character's personal struggles and emotional turmoil. Nandita Das is equally impressive as Thulasi, bringing her strength and vulnerability to life with ease. Manivannan is also noteworthy in his role as Viswanathan's trusted friend and advisor.
The film's direction is solid, although there are some pacing issues in the second half of the film. The cinematography is gorgeous, capturing the vibrant landscapes of Kerala with stunning clarity.
Overall, Vishwa Thulasi is a touching and emotional drama that explores the complexities of human relationships. It is a film that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
