Welcome to the Dollhouse is a bittersweet, comedic coming of age film. It stars Heather Matazzaro as Dawn Weiner. Dawn is lives in a typical suburban community. She is in middle school and her shy, weird personality has made her an outcast among her peers. Her siblings are popular and annoy her. Her mother favors Dawn's sister and Dawn's father always takes her mother's side. Dawn is extremely lonely and only has one friend, her next-door neighbor. There is a mean kid in Dawn's class who harasses her and keeps threatening to rape her. Dawn faces a lot of other trouble while in school. One day a hot guy ends up joining her brother's band and Dawn instantly becomes obsessed with idea of becoming his girlfriend. All the other girls tell her she has no chance but she doesn't care. Dawn's parents throw an anniversary party and Steve, the hot guy from the band, is one of the attendees. Dawn tries to make a pass at him but is instantly rebuffed. Dawn's little sister then pushes her into a pool and the whole family laughs at her. The incident was caught on videotape and the whole family watches it again and again. One day, Dawn's sister goes missing. Dawn decides to track her down in New York City but has no luck. She goes home to find out that her sister was kidnapped by the neighbor. Dawn's whole family is concerned only with her sister and no one seems to notice Dawn. Dawn then gives a thank you speech to the entire school of their help in finding her sister but everyone still makes fun of her at the speech. Dawn is miserable and is forced to go a school field trip to Florida with her classmates. She hopes for that high school and college will be better but the movie ends with Dawn hopeless in her current situation.
