Which Way is Up? is an outrageous comedy farce that was written by Lina Wertmuller, Carl Gottlieb and Cecil Brown. The film was directed by Michael Schultz and features Richard Pryor, Lonette McKee and Margaret Avery. The story follows Leroy (played by Richard Pryor) who begins by falling out of a tree and has found himself landing onto the land of a Latino farm worker. He is a Cesar Chavez like organizer of the United Farm Workers. Leroy has a beautiful wife, Annie Mae (played by Margaret Avery) who refuses to have sex with him. She decides to take on a vow of celibacy for another woman named Vanetta (played by Lonette McKee) who is an intense labor activist. Soon Leroy becomes embroiled in an unfortunate murder for hire scheme. He becomes aware of a dastardly assassination attempt on one of the leaders of the farm workers. He keeps quiet about it in exchange for making foreman in a successful agribusiness conglomerate factory. From this position, Leroy has more power and respect than he has ever experienced in his entire life. This proves to be a heady experience. He is not very successful at maintaining his respectable status as a competent businessman. Leroy begins to hire all of his Latino and black friends in an effort to elevate all f their lives. But under pressure to run the business for a profit, he winds up alienating them when he pushes them just as hard as prior management did before. Leroy also has a ageist homophobic father (also played by Pryor) who is a salacious horn dog. As soon as he learns that his wife has become pregnant, Leroy blows up, since she is carrying another man's baby. He gets revenge by impregnating the wife (played by Marilyn Coleman) of the man his wife became pregnant by. The man hhappens to be a lech and a preacher (also played by Pryor).
