White House Down starts out with John Cale and his daughter Emily Cale going to the White House. After handing Emily two tour tickets to the White House, John informs his daughter that he also have an interview with the secret service. In the job interview with the secret service, John tells them about his prior background working as a Capital Policeman and why he would be better suited to protecting the President. The interviewer Finnerty was not very impressed with John's educational background or his prior working experience, so he is denied the job. Emily highly admires the fact that her father might be a potential candidate for the secret service, so John does not inform his daughter about the job denial that the secret service gave him. Quickly putting it behind him, John and his daughter continue the tour of the White House when suddenly explosions go of and the White House is quickly taken over by a terrorist paramilitary group. John escapes the terrorist, leaving his daughter behind, and quickly works out a plan to save his daughter and the other hostages. John knows that he is quickly running out of time, so he takes out one of the terrorists and takes the radio and the terrorist's weapon. John then overhears President Sawyer's location and makes the tough decision to lay his life on the line to save the President. John then rescues President Sawyer under intense fire. After escaping the intense gunfire and getting to a safe location, John insures that President Sawyer is all right. President Sawyer, dumbfounded and confused, then trails john to the next location.
