She seems to have the perfect home and family. Her husband is a professor at Xavier University where he teaches humanities. He has written several books and is something of a public intellectual. They are upper middle-class and are well-respected by the larger community. One day, a stranger nabs their young daughter when she is playing in a playground. Their daughter is only four years old and, immediately, the kidnapper calls demanding a hefty ransom while making terrible threats against her life. What seems like a perfect life starts to fall apart. After the kidnapping, Kari finds out that her husband was having an affair with his student. Then she learns that this is not the only affair that he had in his life. Her husband feels very guilty and they attempt to sort out the feelings of guilt and rage while looking for their daughter. Meanwhile, the skeletons of Kari's past come out to haunt her. It turns out she is distantly related to the stranger who kidnaps her daughter and her husband is shocked to learn of this and her past life as a hustler. For the next three days, the couple fights relentlessly. They seem unable to move past what they have learned about each other and focus on their daughter and time starts to run out. Finally, the police have a lead that makes them refocus. They receive terrible news. Not only is the kidnapper someone Kari once knew, but he is a serial child rapist and killer. Exasperated, the couple bonds together to fight for their daughter's release. In an heroic ending, the police save her.
