In the third season of the British sitcom Allo' Allo'!, we follow the hilarious misadventures of René, the owner of Café Rene in the French village of Nouvion, during World War II. René is a reluctant hero who gets involved in all sorts of schemes to help the resistance, while also trying to keep his affairs in order and avoid being caught by the German occupying forces.
In the fourth episode of the season, entitled "Flight of Fancy," René finds himself in a tight spot when his wife, Edith, discovers that he has been hiding a British airman in the café's cellar. The airman, Fairfax, is meant to be rescued by a resistance group who promised to get him safely to England, but the plan has hit a snag and Fairfax has been stuck in the cellar for weeks.
Meanwhile, the German officers in town are getting suspicious and have been searching for any signs of underground activity. Colonel Von Strohm and Captain Geering, who are in charge of the local army headquarters, are particularly worried about a British spy who they believe is operating in the area.
To make matters worse, two more British airmen crash-land near the village and are found by Michelle, the leader of the resistance group. She brings them to the café, where they are hiding in the storeroom. René is now responsible for three airmen, and he must come up with a plan to get them out of town before they are discovered by the Germans.
In typical Allo' Allo'! fashion, the episode is filled with misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and absurd situations. René must juggle his loyalty to the resistance, his love for his wife, and his desire to avoid getting into trouble with the Germans. There are also numerous romantic entanglements, including a hilarious scene where Captain Geering tries to woo Edith with disastrous results.
Fans of the show will enjoy the familiar characters and zany humor, as well as the clever wordplay and puns. The cast is excellent, with fine performances from Gorden Kaye as René, Carmen Silvera as Edith, and Richard Marner as Colonel Von Strohm. The guest actors playing the British airmen and resistance fighters also bring a lot of energy and charm to the episode.
Overall, "Flight of Fancy" is a classic episode of Allo' Allo'! that showcases the show's unique blend of slapstick comedy, satire, and wartime intrigue. It's a must-watch for fans of the series and anyone looking for a good laugh.
