In this episode, we follow host Dan Cruickshank as he travels from India to Sri Lanka searching for the next set of hidden treasures. In India, he explores the Ajanta Caves tucked away in the depths of the Indian jungle. The caves were created by Buddhist monks in the 2nd century BC and hold some of the oldest Buddhist relics. Dan reflects on the history of the caves and marvels at the intricate carvings and frescoes on the cave walls. Next, he travels to the great city of Mahabalipuram and visits the famous Shore Temple. The temple, carved out of granite, lies on the coastline of the Bay of Bengal and has been standing for over 1400 years.

After India, Dan cruises to Sri Lanka where he begins his journey in the city of Kandy, the last stronghold of the Sinhalese Kings before the colonization by the British. Dan visits the Temple of the Tooth, an important religious site that contains a tooth from the Buddha. He observes a traditional ceremony where the sacred tooth is revealed to the public.

Moving on from Kandy, Dan explores Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock. The rock is home to a towering fortress that dates back to the 5th century and is said to be the finest example of ancient urban planning in Sri Lanka. After ascending the rock, Dan discovers the breathtaking frescoes in one of the rock caves. He notes the unique blend of South Asian, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern styles in the paintings.

Dan also visits the ancient city of Polonnaruwa that was once the splendid capital of medieval Sri Lanka. Here he traces the history of the city and explores the remains of ancient buildings, including palaces and stupas. He reflects on the trials and triumphs of the kings who ruled Sri Lanka during that period.

Moving towards the end of his journey, Dan explores the famous Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort was built in the 17th century by the Dutch and served as a major commercial hub during the colonial era. Dan observes the unique blend of European and Asian architecture in the buildings within the fort.

Finally, Dan sails to the eastern coast of Sri Lanka to visit the town of Trincomalee. Here, he traces the history of the town and visits the Koneswaram Temple, an important Hindu temple that was destroyed during the colonial era. He observes the remains of the temple and reflects on the complex religious and cultural history of Sri Lanka.

Throughout the episode, Dan takes time to reflect on the history and culture of the places he visits, highlighting the unique treasures that each location holds. Through his journey, viewers gain a greater appreciation for the variety and diversity of cultures around the world.
