In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Extras - Book 2: Earth season 1 episode 5, we witness the Avatar Day. This episode revolves around the Fire Nation soldiers capturing Aang, Katara, and Sokka as they enter a Fire Nation town. The trio soon discovers that the townspeople hate Avatars, and they put them on trial for a crime committed by a previous Avatar several hundred years ago.
The Avatar Day celebration is full of festivities; however, Aang is nowhere close to enjoying the celebration with the hostility he is facing. Meanwhile, Katara and Sokka try to defend Aang in the trial but find difficulty in proving his innocence as the townspeople are not willing to listen.
Aang, in the ritual of the Avatar Day celebration, is taken to the Avatar shrine, where an angry mob tries to burn his statue. This incident forces Aang to take action and use his powers to counter the attack, leading to a confrontation between him and the townspeople.
The episode also features flashbacks of Kyoshi, the previous Avatar who caused the alleged "crime." The flashback shows how Kyoshi, the greatest earthbender of her time, dealt with the corrupt Earth King and created her army.
Overall, Avatar Day is a significant episode as it challenges the notion of a hero. The episode, through the hostility shown towards Aang, showcases the downside of being an Avatar and holding that responsibility. In the end, Aang learns an important lesson about his role as the Avatar and how it can be perceived by the people he is trying to protect.
