The television series Avatar: The Last Airbender was followed by an event called Avatar Extras, where selected episodes included various text pop-ups that provided commentary on the events in the episodes. The pop-up messages either displayed facts about the locations in the episode or terminology mentioned by characters, or provided humorous remarks about what happened in the episodes. The original Extras special focused on the first season, or book, of Avatar. In this season, the primary focus is on the main character, Aang, learning how to bend water. The commentary in these episodes focused on Aang mastering this ability and the environment he did it in and the characters he was surrounded by when he learned it. The commentary in these episodes are considered to be canon. Although viewers were able to learn more specific information about topics that were only touched on in the original series, viewers also found it difficult to differentiate between comments that were meant to be factual and comments that were meant to be sarcastic or humorous. Some of the comments were also found to be inconsistent with information presented in the original series, such as the directors' intentions for the characters and places in the show. Nevertheless, the Extras for Book 1: Water have expanded topics in the show for curious fans.
