Baptiste season 2 episode 1 opens with a tense and fast-paced scene as we see detective Julien Baptiste (Tchéky Karyo) frantically searching for his missing niece, who has disappeared while on a school trip to Hungary. As the episode progresses, we see that Baptiste is struggling to come to terms with his own health issues and the resentful relationship he has with his daughter.

The events of the first episode propel Baptiste into a complicated investigation involving Eastern European gangs, a corrupt hotelier, and a slew of other characters who may or may not be trustworthy. The show's trademark moody tone is very much present, with atmospheric shots of Budapest and ominous music underscoring the tension.

Throughout the episode, we see Baptiste grappling with his own mortality, as well as his guilt over not being able to protect his own family. As he delves deeper into the investigation, we start to see the cracks in his carefully constructed facade, and it becomes clear that he is carrying a lot more emotional baggage than he lets on.

As always, Karyo's performance is riveting, and his portrayal of Baptiste's internal struggles is pitch-perfect. The supporting cast is also strong, with standout performances from Fiona Shaw and Sharon Duncan-Brewster. The writing is tight, and the pacing never lags, even during some of the more exposition-heavy scenes.

Overall, this is a solid beginning to the season, setting up the stakes and presenting us with a compelling mystery. Fans of the previous season will not be disappointed, and those new to the show will find this a great entry point. With a talented group of actors and writers at the helm, Baptiste season 2 episode 1 is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys dark, intelligent crime dramas.
