The crime drama series Defending Jacob unfolds around a shocking crime that rocks a small Massachusetts town and one family in particular, forcing an assistant district attorney to choose between his sworn duty to uphold justice and his unconditional love for his son. Andy Barber is a prosecuting attorney in a suburban town in Massachusetts. He's on the case of a murder of a classmate from his son's school. At first, it seems to be a straight forward case in which a convicted sexual predator is to blame. But as Andy uncovers new evidence, some disturbing connections come to light. Specifically, Andy learns that the victim was unlikable, and that his own son, Jacob, could be a suspect in the case. The fallout from the discoveries threatens both Andy's family and his career. The TV miniseries is based on a novel of the same name by William Landay. The series was filmed on location in Massachusetts. The series was produced exclusively for the Apple TV+ streaming platform. It was given an 8-episode order. Avengers star Chris Evans signed on the play the lead role early in the development process. Evans is also credited as a producer on the project. The series launched in April 2020 to mixed reviews from critics. Some critics praised the performances of Evans and co-star Michelle Dockery. However, most critics found the writing of the series to be unengaging and the resolution of the story to be unsatisfying. Still, the series is reportedly one of the most successful in the Apple TV+ catalog.
