In Baskets season 2 episode 1, titled "Freaks," we see the aftermath of Chip's failed attempt to get "love of his life" Penelope back in the previous season. After the divorce, Chip returns to his hometown of Bakersfield where he moves back in with his mother, Christine (played by Louie Anderson). However, things are not looking too good for him as he struggles to get back on his feet and start his life over.

The episode starts with a frustrated Chip working at the rodeo as a clown performer. He is visibly unhappy with how his life has turned out and misses Penelope terribly. Meanwhile, his twin brother Dale (also played by Zach Galifianakis) is living the high life in Las Vegas after his success as a professional French clown. However, as the episode progresses, we see Dale also facing his own set of problems.

Christine, on the other hand, is trying to keep her life together despite the struggles she faces taking care of her sons. In "Freaks," we get to see a new side of Christine as she opens up about her own personal struggles and the sacrifices she has made for her family. Louie Anderson's portrayal of Christine is tender, heartfelt, and one of the highlights of the episode.

In typical Baskets fashion, "Freaks" is a dark comedy that delves into the lives of people struggling to make ends meet. The episode has a melancholic feel to it, with all characters grappling with their own failures. However, there are still plenty of laughs to be had. The interactions between Christine's best friend, Martha (played by Martha Kelly), and Chip are particularly entertaining.

As with the first season, "Freaks" features a number of bizarre and hilarious characters. One such character is a new clown in town, Eddie (played by Eddie Pepitone), who Chip befriends. Eddie is a recovering alcoholic who has a strong affinity for fire, which leads to some wild and dangerous stunts throughout the episode.

The episode ends on a hopeful note, with Chip deciding to take a leap of faith and pursue his dreams. While the show is far from a fairy tale, the ending feels satisfying and sets the tone for what is to come in the rest of the season.

Overall, "Freaks" is a great start to the second season of Baskets. The show is artfully crafted, blending humor and pathos in a way that is both unique and refreshing. The characters are quirky and endearing, and the writing is sharp and witty. If you enjoyed the first season of Baskets, then "Freaks" is a must-watch.
