In season 1, episode 10 of Beyond Survival With Les Stroud, titled "The Mentawai Shamans of Indonesia," Les travels to the remote Mentawai Islands in Indonesia to learn from the indigenous people and their shamans. Stroud experiences their ancient traditions and ceremonies, discovering how they have been able to preserve their culture amid increasing modernization and tourism. He meets with one of the last surviving traditional shamans, Sikerei Mutiara, and through interpreters, he learns the shaman's methods and the way of life for the Mentawai people.

The episode opens with Les Stroud, also known as Survivorman, arriving on the Mentawai Islands. The Mentawai is an archipelago off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, and isolated from the mainland. Stroud explains how the Mentawai's traditions and cultural knowledge have been threatened with the arrival of tourists and technology. However, some of the Mentawai have been able to preserve their culture against all odds, and they still practice their ancient traditions and shamanic rituals.

Stroud meets with Sikerei Mutiara, a respected elder who is one of the last surviving traditional shamans in the region. The Shaman is the key figure within Mentawai culture, and their traditions and rituals revolve around their teachings. Stroud learns that these teachings demonstrated the interconnectivity between all living beings. Sikerei explains that the Mentawai believe the forest and the sea are two of the most critical features reflecting the balance of life, and the shamans would undertake a visionary journey using natural substances, high in the forest canopy, to gain insight and see if everything entered into harmony.

Les observes as the shaman performs a traditional ceremony involving different symbols, chants, and dances. He witnesses how the Shaman interacts with the different elements of nature. The ceremony represents a form of spiritual cleansing, where Sikerei Mutiara harnesses the strength of the forest to remove illness, negative thoughts, and malevolent spirits from the person seeking help. The aim is to restore balance to the individual.

Les Stroud also gets to experience a Mentawai initiation ceremony that involves ritual tattoos. The tattoos, known as Sakau, are applied using a traditional method called hand poke. The tattoos represent protection from evil, strength, and good luck, and are closely linked to the spirituality of the Mentawai community. Les undergoes the tattooing process and is amazed by the precision and knowledge passed down through generations.

Through his experience, Les Stroud highlights how the Mentawai culture and its Shamanic traditions provide a deep sense of spiritual connection and belonging to the environment and its inhabitants. The episode closes with Stroud acknowledging the importance of cultural preservation and how it carries the knowledge of many generations.
