In the fourth episode of Big Mouth season 2, the adolescents at Bridgeton Middle School continue to navigate the treacherous waters of puberty and burgeoning sexuality. This time, the focus is on the popular girls, particularly mean girl Devin and her cronies, who have found a new object of their ridicule: Jessi.
Jessi, still reeling from her parents' divorce and her own personal problems, finds solace in her newfound passion for art. But when the popular girls catch wind of her talent, they use it as another way to put her down. With the support of her best friend Missy and the ghost of Duke Ellington, who continues to haunt the halls of Bridgeton Middle School, Jessi stands up to Devin and her friends, and in doing so, gains a newfound confidence in herself.
Meanwhile, Andrew's hormones continue to rage out of control as he becomes obsessed with the newest addition to the school, a transgender student named Natalie. He struggles with his own feelings of attraction towards her and his fear of what his friends will think if he pursues her. As usual, Andrew's hormones get the best of him, leading him down a path of selfishness and disrespect towards Natalie.
The theme of identity continues to be explored in this episode, as Nick wrestles with his own insecurities about his physical appearance. In an attempt to impress his crush Missy, Nick takes drastic steps to change his appearance, including getting a spray tan and bleaching his hair. But as he realizes that he can't be someone he's not, he learns a valuable lesson about self-acceptance and honesty.
Overall, this episode of Big Mouth continues to explore the complex and often confusing world of adolescence, with humor and heart. While the struggles of puberty and teenage years may be difficult, the show reminds us that it's possible to get through them with the help of friends, family, and self-love.
