Ep 1. Pilot

Joanna Hanley (Kristin Kreuk) is a successful corporate lawyer in big city life, but when a mysterious and devastating illness plaguing a group of girls from her hometown, Millwood, is blamed on a local steel mill owned by her father's former employer, she returns to the small town she grew up in to represent Allenstown's sick girls. Upon arrival, she meets with her father David (Alex Carter) who warns her that coming back to Millwood won't be easy as her family name carries a lot of burdens including her family’s dark past and an unfinished business. David is somewhat aloof with her and doesn’t want to say much about the past or about the current situation.

Joanna hits the ground running trying to get to the root of the case and to the heart of her hometown. As she begins to gather the facts about the girls' illness, her investigation leads her to realize that her never-ending goal to achieve corporate success has blinded her from the individuals affected by the tragic event. She aims to seek justice for all those involved, despite resistance from the townsfolk, mill operators, and even the victims' families. Alongside her small-town client Billy Crawford (Peter Mooney), in a wrongful dismissal case that could be related to the current epidemic, she slowly begins to uncover a long history of deceit and corruption that has left the town's citizens in danger and has ultimately affected her family.

Burden of Truth: Pilot tackles the range of challenges Joanna faces as an outsider in her hometown, navigating an emotionally charged legal case that pits her against her friends and family. It explores the anatomy of small-town life and the cost of doing justice and the struggle between right and wrong. The episode is well-paced and written, drawing the viewer, with a sense of mystery and intrigue, in the first few minutes with the promise of more secrets to come.
