When the Greendale Gazette Journal's editors declare the paper is a toilet, the newly formed journalism club takes it upon themselves to turn things around. As their first assignment, they decide to investigate a cheating scandal taking place during Spanish class, which brings them in direct opposition with Jeff who would rather the paper focus on good news stories only. On one hand, Jeff wants to avoid drawing any negative attention to himself and on the other, he is reluctant to acknowledge he has broken any rules. This conflict sets the tone for the episode as the tension between the two parties escalates.

Meanwhile, Britta decides to run an anti-drug campaign which rapidly spirals out of control. She ropes Annie into helping her, and they end up organizing an anti-drug dance number in the student lounge. This sequence proves to be a feast for the eyes as both characters put on their dancing shoes and pull off some impressive moves. Their dance number becomes so popular that the students demand they keep performing it, but unknowingly they are attracting a lot of unwanted attention.

The investigative journalism club and Britta's dance number collide when members of the school board come to visit Greendale and find the school in chaos. Jeff puts the blame solely on the journalism club, leading to a power struggle that forces the group to think on their feet. Abed, the club's resident filmmaker, suggests they start filming the school's positive aspects as a way to counteract the bad press. Jeff sees through this and confronts the club but is surprised by the footage they have gathered.

Meanwhile, Britta's anti-drug campaign has turned into a viral sensation and now, the student body is addicted to performing the dance number. Abed's film crew captures the madness that ensues when the board members arrive. They panic as they see the students, faculty, and staff all dancing uncontrollably. Jeff and the club members have to put their differences aside and work together to put an end to the chaos.

The episode ends with Troy, who had previously expressed his concern about the people who had disappeared after performing the dance number, asking Abed to stop filming. This turns the focus back to the original investigation, where the journalism club finds evidence that proves Jeff is guilty of cheating and had expected to blackmail him with it. However, to their surprise, Jeff gives a rousing speech about how Greendale has changed him, and he wants to make amends for his past mistakes. The journalism club members realize that their work has brought about positive change, and they are happy with the direction Greendale is heading.

Overall, Investigative Journalism is an enjoyable episode that showcases the various personalities of the Greendale Community College cast. It highlights their ability to work together despite their differences, as well as their comedic timing and individual talents in the face of unexpected challenges.
