Jeff Winger, played by Joel McHale, is back to study in Greendale Community College when the episode begins and becomes very competitive when he learns that he has been chosen to represent the school in a debate championship against rival school City College. With the help of the rest of the study group - Britta, Abed, Troy, Shirley, Annie, and Pierce - Jeff prepares to take on the competition.

Meanwhile, Dean Pelton, played by Jim Rash, is dealing with a crisis of his own after finding out that the school is facing financial troubles and must cut certain programs. He decides to organize a "Save Greendale" rally to encourage the community to donate money to the school, but things take a turn for the worse when the rally goes horribly wrong, leaving the school in an even worse financial position than before.

As if things couldn't get any worse, Jeff's long lost father, played by James Brolin, suddenly reappears and throws a wrench into Jeff's plans. Jeff must choose between his desire to win the debate championship and his desire to reconnect with his father.

The episode is full of twists and turns as the study group faces one obstacle after another in their battle against City College. Along the way, they must balance their personal issues with their commitment to the school and to each other. With its clever writing, sharp humor, and lovable characters, Introduction To Finality is a standout episode in Community's already impressive third season.
