David and Andy continue with their metal detecting on the fields near their home town. They hope to find something good this season, as they both feel a little disappointed with last season's poor results. The second episode introduces Sophie, a cute girl who came from up north and started working at the archaeology centre of the University of East Anglia. She sparked the interest of both David and Andy, who looked out for an opportunity to impress her.

The two friends' luck takes a turn for the better, as they discover a Viking silver hoard from the 9th century. However, their happiness is short-lived as the archaeology centre imposes upon them the right to keep their finds, as they believe that the hoard is of significant historical and cultural significance. While the friends are content that their discovery was authentic, they remain aggrieved that they can't keep them. Along with this situation, tensions arise as Andy tries getting too friendly with Sophie, whilst David is more cautious.

Furthermore, the second episode also introduces Lance's subplotline, David's father-in-law, who decided to join an amateur dramatics group. He was excited about his debut as a Roman General, but his enthusiasm was crushed after the play was canceled due to an emergency incident amongst the cast. In desperation, he invites the two friends, David and Andy, to join the group. David insists, showing some reluctance, while Andy exploits this as an opportunity to pursue Sophie. Lance's offer draws David into further contact with Sophie, Andy brushes off David's uncertainty, with only the possibility of Sophie causing issues for him.

Overall, the second episode of Detectorists is a delightful continuation of this comical British TV show. It balances the light humor with a brilliant metal detecting subplot, interlaced with some intriguing character development of its cast.
