The couple has been married for 14 years and is experiencing irreconcilable differences that have drastically changed the foundation of their marriage.
Arnold, a construction worker, and Janet, a stay-at-home mother of three children, have contrasting views on how their marriage should operate. Janet reveals that Arnold spends most of his time at his job and hardly has time for their family, let alone for her. On the other hand, Arnold seems to be unhappy because he feels as if Janet is not giving him the support he needs to work towards his goals.
The couple's communication has broken down, and they have resorted to insults and derogatory statements towards each other. They're unable to connect without arguing, and it has affected their children's mental & emotional wellbeing. The judge works to unravel the roots of their conflicts to determine if there's any hope for restoring their bond.
Janet testifies that Arnold isn't affectionate, doesn't communicate, and doesn't prioritize his family responsibilities. Arnold counters with claims that Janet is inconsiderate and lacks support for his goals. Arnold accuses Janet of being lazy and unmotivated and complains that she lacks the initiative to contribute economically to the family.
The judge presiding over their case makes efforts to help the couple see the underlying reasons for their problems while also taking into account their claim and defense network. The truth always comes out, and in this case, it stems from insecurities, feeling misunderstood, and differing expectations.
In seeking reconciliation for the parties, the judge listens to both of their perspectives, and with clarity, informs them of how those standpoints come across to the other partner. The judge guides this couple through reparative communication exercises, including active listening and hearing the other side's point of view.
By the end of this episode, the parties achieve profound self-discovery. They together work to start the journey of rebuilding their connection by being aware of the undesired behaviors and committing to finding more effective solutions to their perceived problems. They both end up learning valuable lessons that will serve them in their future, regardless of the court's final decision.
