The show Doctor Who first started airing way back in 1963, and it became an instant hit with fans of science fiction around the world. Generations of fans would grow up with the iconic character of the Doctor, a time-traveling alien who regularly saved the universe from harm. In 2005, the BBC relaunched the show, bringing it up to date with modern sensibilities and special effects. The first episode of the new series is called "Rose," and it introduces us to a new companion for the Doctor, a young woman called Rose Tyler.

The episode starts off by introducing us to Rose, who works in a department store. Things seem pretty mundane until she finds herself being chased by a group of mysterious shop dummies that seem to be alive. That's when the Doctor (played by Christopher Eccleston) bursts onto the scene, saving her from certain death and whisking her away in his time-traveling spaceship, the TARDIS.

The TARDIS, for those unfamiliar with the show, looks like a vintage British police box from the outside, but it's much bigger on the inside and can travel anywhere in space and time. The Doctor is the last of his kind, a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels the universe fighting evil and helping people.

Rose is understandably shocked by all of this, but the Doctor quickly impresses upon her the gravity of their situation. Not only are the shop dummies attacking people all over the city, but there's a much bigger threat looming on the horizon. The Doctor detects a massive energy wave emanating from a disused underground station, and he and Rose hurry there to investigate.

It turns out that the energy wave is being generated by a group of aliens called the Nestene Consciousness, who have taken up residence in the station. The Nestene are a non-corporeal race, and they need living organisms to possess in order to interact with the physical world. In this case, they've acquired a large quantity of plastic and are using it to create living mannequins that they can control.

The Doctor and Rose infiltrate the station and stumble upon a plot by the Nestene to release a deadly virus that would wipe out all human life on Earth. Along the way, they encounter a shady organization called UNIT, who initially mistake the Doctor for a hostile alien but eventually come to realize that he's on their side.

The ensuing action is fast-paced and thrilling, with the Doctor and Rose using their wits and ingenuity to stop the Nestene from carrying out their plan. There are plenty of close calls and hair-raising moments, but in the end, the day is saved and the Earth is safe once again.

Throughout the episode, we get a sense of the Doctor's personality - he's eccentric, witty, and fiercely intelligent, but he can also be brusque and impatient. He's seen and done things that would drive most people insane, and he's clearly carrying a lot of emotional baggage from his past. Despite his quirks, though, there's an undeniable charm to the Doctor, and he and Rose quickly develop a rapport.

Rose, for her part, is a plucky and resourceful young woman who's equal parts brave and curious. She's quickly swept up in the Doctor's world and seems to take everything in stride, even when confronted with the most bizarre and terrifying circumstances. She's clearly fascinated by the Doctor and eager to learn more about his background and his adventures.

Overall, "Rose" is an excellent introduction to the new series of Doctor Who. It's fast-paced, funny, and suspenseful, and it lays the groundwork for the many exciting adventures to come. Fans of the show will no doubt appreciate the updated visuals and special effects, while newcomers will find the episode an accessible entry point into the world of the Doctor. All in all, it's a great start to what would become a beloved and enduring series.
