Gavin and Stacey is a British sitcom based around a relationship between the titular characters of Gavin and Stacey; comedy and tension arise from the clash of cultures that occurs because Gavin is from the English town of Billericay and Stacey from the Welsh seaside town of Barry. Although titled for the main characters the 20 episode run over three seasons of the show was famous for its ensemble cast that included famous British comic actors Rob Brydon and Alison Steadman. The show was written by James Corden and Ruth Jones, who also appear as supporting characters Smithy and Nessa; the main characters of Gavin and Stacey were played by Matthew Horne and Joanna Page. Corden and Jones claimed they wrote the show as they could not find any good comic characters to play so decided to create their own. Initially produced by Baby Cow production for the cable channel BBC Three in the U.K. the show later switched to network television channels BBC Two and later BBC One as its popularity grew. Gavin and Stacey begins with the main characters of Gavin and Stacey organizing to meet in person for the first time after talking over the phone for business reasons. The series follows their relationship as it progresses from first meeting through to marriage and the couple's attempts to conceive; during the course of the show both Gavin and Stacey travel to their partners area of Britain and are shocked by the differences in culture they encounter. During their travels to different parts of the world they are often accompanied by their parents, family members and friends. Gavin's best friend Smithy begins a relationship with Stacey's best friend Nessa after both accompany their friend to the first meeting. Running parallel to the relationship of Gavin and Stacey the characters of Smithy and Nessa have a much more difficult relationship both refuse to recognize. Towards the end of the third season Gavin and Stacey resolve their issues with each other and their problems deciding where to live; because of this the relationship between Smithy and Nessa becomes the main focus of the final episodes of the season. Smithy must come to terms with Nessa's relationship with Dave Coaches whom she plans to marry and his own role in the new family with regards to the son, Neil the pair share. Gavin and Stacey were given a prominent role in the 2009 Christmas schedule of the BBC when the final episodes of season three were broadcast.

It's Christmas in Barry and Billericay and we're back with the Shipmans and Wests for the festivities. One family member has taken it upon themselves to do all the cooking. Pete and Dawn have a problem. Stacey's not sure whether to go for romance or practicality when it comes to buying presents. Pam forgets an important Christmas Day ingredient and Nessa offers some sound advice. Plus Smithy's Dad is joining the festivities this year, will Smithy Senior get along with the others? Or will his presence ruffle a few turkey feathers?
