The Last Kingdom is set in the year 872. The show is centered around a cluster of small kingdoms, what we now call modern day England. The Danes have invaded the group of kingdoms leaving only one left to stand against them, the kingdom of Wessex. King Alfred leads Wessex and has remained defiant and strong against the invading Danes.

The main character and hero of the story, Uhtred, is from Wessex. Born the offspring of a Saxon Nobleman, ten-year-old Uhtred becomes captured by the Danes who choose to keep him and raise him as one of their own. As the story unfolds, Uhtred is forced the make the decision between the country that gave birth to him or the people that raised him. Throughout the show his fidelity will be tried at every turn. As the adventure goes on, he will realize that the decision must be made, is he Saxon or is he Dane?

Should he choose to regain ownership of his birthright as the commander of Wessex he will become the creator of a new nation, but that will require venturing down a dangerous path between Wessex and the Danes.

The Last Kingdom is based on a best selling book from Bernard Cornwell's series The Saxon Stories. It weaves together both historical facts with elements of fiction and characters. The story is loosely taken from King Alfred the Great's crusade to join the numerous small kingdoms into what we now call England.
