Doctor Who (2005) Season 19 Episode 23 Time-Flight: Part 1
- January 1, 1970
The Doctor and his companions Tegan and Nyssa find themselves unexpectedly back at Heathrow Airport, where the TARDIS appears to have brought them in response to a distress signal. However, they soon discover that something is terribly wrong: the entire airport has been emptied of people, and all of the planes have disappeared. With no clues as to what has happened, the Doctor and his friends begin to investigate.
Their first major discovery is a small, strange object buried in the ground near the airport: a piece of an alien craft. The Doctor immediately recognizes the technology involved as belonging to a race known as the Xeraphin, who disappeared millennia ago along with their planet. He also realizes that the remaining piece of the Xeraphin vessel is the source of the distress signal that brought the TARDIS here.
Before they can investigate further, the Doctor and his companions are interrupted by the arrival of a new group of travellers: a planeload of passengers, apparently from the 1980s, who have somehow been transported through time to this era. Among them are two particularly noteworthy individuals: a jocular Australian businessman named Richard Mace and a physicist named Professor Hayter.
As the group tries to figure out what has happened to the planes and how to reverse it, they discover various strange phenomena in and around the airport: a sudden wind that seems to come from nowhere, mysterious power surges, and strange voices speaking from nowhere. Meanwhile, Tegan is seized by a sudden urge to leave the TARDIS and stay behind at the airport, much to the Doctor's puzzlement.
As they continue to investigate, the Doctor and his companions discover that the Xeraphin are not simply a vanished race, but actually a group of beings who live outside of normal time and are capable of manipulating it. They also discover that the Xeraphin were taken captive by a being known as Kalid, who has somehow gained control of their ancient technology and is using it to manipulate and control time in various ways. Kalid appears to be an ethereal figure with powers beyond those of any of the conventional races of the universe.
What follows is a tense and action-packed adventure as the Doctor and his companions work to unravel the mystery of what happened at Heathrow, figure out how to stop Kalid, and undo the damage that has been done to the fabric of time itself. With breathtaking special effects and compelling performances from the entire cast, "Time-Flight: Part 1" is a thrilling and unforgettable episode of Doctor Who that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats.
