Ep 7. The Idiot's Lantern

In Doctor Who season 2 episode 8, entitled "The Idiot's Lantern," the Doctor and his companion Rose find themselves in London in the year 1953, just before the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. However, something strange is happening: people are disappearing after buying a new type of television set, and it seems the televisions are draining the life force of their viewers.

The Doctor becomes involved when one of these television sets is delivered to the home of the Connolly family. After the father, Eddie Connolly, is taken by the television, the Doctor and Rose work to uncover the mystery behind the device. They discover that it is being controlled by an alien entity known as the Wire, which feeds on the energy and thoughts of humans. The Wire's goal is to use the coronation broadcast to suck the brainwaves from every human on Earth.

As the Wire takes control of more and more people, the Doctor and Rose must race against time to stop it before it can execute its plan. Along the way, they team up with a local private detective, Mr. Magpie, who has been working to uncover the truth behind the disappearances but has become a pawn in the Wire's game.

The episode also explores the relationship between the Doctor and Rose, as Rose becomes increasingly aware of the dangers and consequences of traveling with him. She questions whether her experiences with the Doctor have caused her to become different from the person she once was, and wonders whether she will ever be able to return to her normal life.

In the end, the Doctor and Rose are able to defeat the Wire by trapping it inside a television and broadcasting it back into the infinite expanse of space. The Connollys are reunited and life returns to normal in 1950s London, but the episode leaves open the question of whether Rose will ultimately choose to stay with the Doctor or return to her old life.
