Frank Murphy, his wife Sue, and their three children are back for the second season of F is for Family, and the first episode promises to be a wild ride. Titled "Heavy Sledding," the episode takes place during a particularly harsh winter in the early 1970s, when the Murphys are struggling to make ends meet.
As the episode begins, Frank is on a mission to find the perfect sled for his kids. He enlists the help of his neighbor Chet, an avid outdoorsman who takes pride in his DIY sled-building skills. Together, they set out to build a sled that will be the envy of all the other kids in the neighborhood, but getting the parts they need proves more difficult than anticipated.
Meanwhile, Sue is dealing with her own troubles. She's picked up a part-time job at a local department store, but her boss is a tyrant who constantly belittles her and pushes her to do more work than seems humanly possible. It's clear that Sue is unhappy, but she's not sure how to get out of the situation without causing more problems.
The episode also takes time to check in with the Murphys' kids. Kevin, the oldest, is struggling to fit in at school and is starting to act out in more dangerous ways. His little brother Bill is still dealing with the fallout from his traumatic experience with a clown in season one, and little Maureen is just trying to stay out of everyone else's way.
As the episode progresses, tensions start to mount between Frank and Sue. Frank is frustrated with his job at the airport, which seems to be going nowhere, and he's taking out his anger on his family. Sue, in turn, is starting to feel like she's not being appreciated for all the hard work she's doing to keep the family afloat.
Despite all the tension and conflict, however, there are some moments of levity in "Heavy Sledding." Chet provides some much-needed comic relief with his over-the-top enthusiasm for sled-building, and there are plenty of slapstick moments involving the kids and their various attempts at sledding.
Overall, "Heavy Sledding" sets the stage for what promises to be an emotionally charged season of F is for Family. The show has always excelled at balancing dark humor with genuine pathos, and this episode is no exception. It's clear that the Murphys are in for a rough ride this season, but we can't help but root for them to come out on top.
