As the investigation began, the police discovered that Kortne's neighbors were the last people to see her alive. They were questioned extensively but denied any involvement in Kortne's disappearance. However, it soon emerged that the neighbors had a history of harassing Kortne, and some of the evidence at the crime scene seemed to suggest that Kortne had been the victim of foul play.

Days turned into weeks, and then months, with no sign of Kortne. Wendy and her family were desperate for answers and refused to give up hope. However, as time passed, the lack of progress in the investigation and the uncertainty surrounding Kortne's fate began to take a toll on Wendy, and she struggled with depression and anxiety.

Several years later, in 2016, there was a break in the case when one of Kortne's neighbors ran into trouble with the law. The neighbor was arrested on drug charges, and during questioning, he confessed to knowing what had happened to Kortne. The new leads led the police to make a surprising discovery.
