Formula One Qualifying is a live event that takes place every Saturday when there is a Formula One race. F1 Qualifying is viewed as a precursor to Sunday's race, with the 22 cars registered for that event looking to determine their starting positions. The qualifying sessions are divided into three parts, known as Q1, Q2 and Q3. The first session, Q1 is 15 minutes long. The slowest seven drivers are eliminated at the end of that session. Q2 and Q3 are both 10 minutes. The next 5 slowest drivers (positions 11-15) are eliminated in Q2, while Q3 is a shoot out to determine the top ten grid positions for the race. Drivers are allowed to use as many sets of tires as they want, but they must start the race with the same tire used to set their fastest lap of Q2. This ensures that the top ten drivers can drive flat out in Q3 without having to worry about preserving those sets of tires. Qualifying is a very tightly contested event in Formula One. Pole position can often come down to a few tenths of a second. Sometimes the top 10 to 15 drivers are split by one or two seconds. Overall lap times range from 1 minute 10 seconds to 2 minutes 10 seconds depending on the venue and the weather conditions.
