Episodes of Getting Doug with High often follow a simple formula: host and comedian Doug Benson (best known for his work on Doug Loves Movies) sits down with a guest, the two of them smoke marijuana together, and they proceed to talk about whatever comes to mind. But what really sets each episode apart is the guests themselves. In season 1 episode 10, Benson is joined by actor Dominic Monaghan, best known for his roles in the Lord of the Rings and Lost franchises.
Early on in the episode, Benson asks Monaghan if he's ever smoked weed before, and Monaghan admits that he hasn't really since he was a teenager. But he seems more than ready to dive back in: when Benson offers him a choice of strains (Super Lemon Haze, for the record), Monaghan chooses a particularly potent-sounding one called Chernobyl. "Send me to Russia!" he jokes. (He'll soon regret that.)
As the two start smoking, they chat about everything from Monaghan's fear of spiders ("I'd rather be covered in snakes than have one spider crawl on my face") to his experiences working with director Peter Jackson on the Lord of the Rings films. Monaghan describes Jackson's intense attention to detail, even on things like the food that the Hobbits eat onscreen. "If it was too nice, he'd say, 'This is supposed to be hard work. Make it s--t-ier!'" Monaghan says. "He wanted it to be difficult for us."
But as the weed starts to take effect, things take a turn. Monaghan seems to be struggling to keep up with Benson, who's something of an old pro when it comes to smoking weed and carrying on a conversation at the same time. The more they talk, the more Monaghan’s thought process seems to spiral out of control—although he always seems to end up in a good place. He admits that he hasn't watched Lost since it ended, and he starts to get paranoid about how the show ended ("I don't think it was real!").
At one point, Monaghan tells a story about a time he tried ayahuasca, a powerful hallucinogenic tea with an ancient history of use in South America. Despite the fact that the experience was "life-changing," Monaghan admits that he's not sure he'd be willing to do it again. "I think I'm just too sensitive to this stuff," he says.
As the episode nears its end and the weed starts to wear off, Benson and Monaghan both start to seem a bit more sober and relaxed. They talk about the things they're excited about (Monaghan is, somewhat surprisingly, a big fan of electronica music), and they reflect on the experience of getting high together. Despite some of the initial confusion, both seem to agree that it was a good time. "I'm so glad you came by and got high with me," Benson says. "It's a pleasure to see you, man."
Ultimately, the episode of Getting Doug with High featuring Dominic Monaghan is a fun, freewheeling conversation between two guys who just happen to be smoking weed together. Whether you're a fan of Monaghan's acting work or just of Benson's laid-back hosting style, there's plenty to enjoy here. Just be warned: if you're sensitive about spiders, you might want to skip a few parts.
