In America Everything Is Possible is the first episode of the brand new television series, Gordita Chronicles, a coming-of-age comedy that follows a Latina family in Miami, Florida during the 1980s. The show is a groundbreaking production that explores the lives of the Garcias – an all-American family of Cuban-Bolivian descent – as they grapple with the everyday opportunities and challenges that come with being a part of a dynamic, multicultural society.
The Garcias are like any other family trying to navigate their way through the ins and outs of adolescence in a foreign land. They're constantly juggling their cultural identity and trying to balance their customs with their desire to be accepted by their peers. The teenage protagonist, Carlota (played by Olivia Goncalves), is a free spirit who dreams of being a writer, but is told by her family that writing is not a practical career choice. In this episode, her father, Tio Victor (Juan Javier Cardenas), sells her a typewriter for $20. On the way home, Carlota dreams of her future life as a famous writer.
The episode starts with the Garcias moving into a new house. Carlota is disappointed that she won’t have a room to herself, which is a major challenge for a creative teenage girl. Her mother's brother, Tio Victor, helps them move and provides Carlota with a typewriter. He tells her not to let their parents know that he gave it to her. Carlota is over the moon when she gets the typewriter, as it provides her with a way to escape and explore her creative side.
Amidst all the chaos of moving, the family attends a welcome party for their new neighbors, the Hernandez family. Carlota is fascinated by Marisol Hernandez (Lorena Diaz), a girl from her school who appears to be leading the perfect life. Marisol is smart, confident, and popular. She speaks perfect English and has an American accent. Carlota spends most of the party eavesdropping on Marisol and her family, hoping to uncover some secrets about their seemingly perfect lives.
As the episode progresses, Carlota struggles to find her place in her new home and in the American culture around her. Her father, played by Juan Javier Cardenas, tells her about his own experience of moving from Bolivia to the United States when he was a teenager. He describes how difficult it was to adjust to a new place and a new culture, especially since he didn't speak English. Carlota is surprised by this because she realizes that her dad is not as uncool as she thought he was.
Eventually, Carlota discovers that things aren't always what they seem. She learns that Marisol struggles with the same challenges she does and that her life isn't as perfect as it appears. The episode ends with Carlota's dad giving her a pep talk about the importance of family and heritage. He tells her that being different is what makes them special and that they should never be ashamed of where they come from.
Overall, In America Everything Is Possible is a heartwarming and relatable introduction to the Garcias and their journey. The episode touches on themes of identity, family, and the power of storytelling to help us navigate life's challenges. Olivia Goncalves does an exceptional job portraying the teenage protagonist, Carlota, and is sure to win over audiences with her wit, charm, and relatable struggles. With its strong writing, diverse cast, and authentic portrayal of Latinx culture, Gordita Chronicles promises to be a hit series that will capture the hearts of audiences everywhere.
