In Gossip Girl season 1 episode 9, titled "Blair Waldorf Must Pie!", we see Thanksgiving approaching, which means different things to different characters. To Blair, it means hosting the high society family dinner, and she is determined to have everything perfect, including her outfit. To Dan, Thanksgiving means having a chance to see Serena after being rejected by her. Meanwhile, Nate is struggling as he tries to figure out how to give his grandfather the best possible Thanksgiving, which requires some unpleasant actions behind the scenes.
Blair tries to create the perfect family dinner, which includes her father, who she hasn't seen since her parents' divorce. Trying to impress the family, she assigns tasks to the servants, including housemaid Dorota, who is happy just to be included. However, things start to unravel when her father brings his boyfriend (who he previously made Blair swear to keep a secret). Meanwhile, Serena is avoiding Dan after telling him she doesn't reciprocate his feelings, but he manages to find a way to spend time with her by volunteering at the community center where she has also decided to help out on Thanksgiving day.
As the day progresses, secrets are revealed, tensions rise, and relationships are tested. Blair discovers her father's secret relationship, and she is initially upset, but then decides to accept it and invite his boyfriend to join their dinner. Nate's plan to make his grandfather happy goes sour when he catches his girlfriend hooking up with his best friend, leading him to go on a spiral of self-destructive behavior that causes him to miss the family dinner.
Throughout the episode, we see characters struggling with their own insecurities. Blair is determined to show off her perfect life, but she is forced to confront her own imperfect family dynamic. Serena is struggling to find her place in both the community center event and her relationship with Dan. Dan is trying to move on from Serena, but he still can't help but try to be close to her. Nate is trying to make things right with his family, but his own complicated love life gets in the way.
Overall, this episode of Gossip Girl shows the characters confronting their own vulnerabilities in the midst of Thanksgiving, a holiday that is supposed to promote gratitude and togetherness. We see the way secrets and lies can tear families and relationships apart, but also how facing these truths can bring people closer together. The episode is full of drama, but also moments of levity and warmth, making it a great addition to the first season of the show.
