Episode 1 of Higurashi: When They Cry - GOU season 2 opens with a group of teenagers, including the series’ protagonist, Keiichi Maebara, gathered outside the Furude Shrine for the annual Watanagashi Festival. Keiichi and his friends, Rena, Mion, Satoko, and Rika, are excited to partake in the festivities, which include carnival games, food stalls, and a parade.
However, their joyous mood takes a turn when a group of outsiders arrive in town. The group, made up of four young adults, arrives in a black SUV and immediately sets themselves apart from the townspeople. Their presence creates a palpable tension, with the locals whispering and pointing at them.
As Keiichi and his friends wander about the festival grounds, they meet up with a girl named Teppei. She is one of the outsiders, and she seems to have taken a liking to Keiichi. She flirts with him and invites him to join her and her friends for a game of darts. Keiichi declines, feeling uneasy about the outsiders and their intentions.
Later that evening, Keiichi and his friends gather in a park to watch the fireworks display. However, their peaceful moment is interrupted by a distressed Satoko. She claims that her uncle has returned to the town, and she is afraid of what he might do to her. Her uncle, Teppei, is one of the outsiders who arrived earlier that day.
Keiichi and his friends decide to investigate and track down Teppei. They find him at a local bar, where he appears to be causing trouble. Mion confronts him, warning him to stay away from Satoko. Teppei responds with aggression, and a fight breaks out between him and Keiichi's friends.
Amid the chaos, the group discovers a shocking revelation: Teppei is not Satoko's uncle, but rather her abusive foster parent. He had been taken into police custody years ago, but somehow managed to escape and has returned to the town.
The episode ends with Keiichi and his friends considering their next move in the face of this new threat. As the Watanagashi Festival comes to a close, it becomes clear that the arrival of the outsiders has brought with it a new wave of danger and uncertainty to the town of Hinamizawa.
