When a marine sergeant named Nicholas Brody is rescued after living as a prisoner in Iraq for eight years, everyone in the United States is grateful for his return. Everyone except CIA officer Carrie Mathison, who, unbeknownst to her colleagues, has reason to believe Brody was turned by al-Qaeda after being tortured and brainwashed. Mathison quickly becomes obsessed with Brody and begins conducting an unauthorized surveillance of him, despite her superior's warnings to stay away. Meanwhile, Brody tries to adjust to life back in America with his wife, children, and old friends, but his experiences in Iraq have left him severely traumatized and suffering from flashbacks and hallucinations.
