"Crips & Bloods: Made in America" is the compelling and intimate story of the decades-long conflict between two of Los Angeles' most notorious street gangs. Drawing from a vast archive of footage, news clips, and personal interviews, this Independent Lens episode traces the rise of the Crips and Bloods from their roots as self-protection groups in the 1960s to their explosive growth in the 1980s and beyond. Along the way, we meet former gang members, community activists, and experts who offer insight into the complex roots of gang violence, and the challenges of breaking the cycle of poverty, violence, and prejudice that fuel it. Through their stories, we gain a new perspective on these marginalized communities, and a deeper understanding of the forces shaping our urban landscape.
