- March 24, 2014
All of Me: A Story of Love, Loss, and Last Resorts is the thirteenth episode of the fifteenth season of Independent Lens. This episode tells the story of a group of people struggling with obesity who decide to undergo weight-loss surgery together at a clinic in Mexico.
The documentary follows the lives of four individuals who have struggled with obesity for years and have tried various diets and exercise programs to no avail. They decide to take a drastic step to improve their health and quality of life by undergoing weight-loss surgery at the cheap and controversial A Lighter Me clinic in Tijuana, Mexico.
We are introduced to Dawnielle, who despite having tried every method possible to lose weight, including several surgeries, has not managed to shed the pounds. This surgery is her last resort to kickstart her weight loss journey. We also meet Veronica, who, after losing her mother to diabetes, fears that she too will succumb to the disease if she does not address her obesity.
Thirdly, we are introduced to Denise, who has battled her weight her entire life, leading to her feeling like she has no control and is not strong enough to lose the pounds without help. Lastly, there is Vanessa, who, after years of insecurity related to her weight, has decided to undergo the surgery to improve her confidence and self-esteem.
As they embark on their journey to Tijuana, the documentary follows them through the preparations for the surgery, including meeting and getting to know the other patients who have similar struggles to their own. They form a tight bond, sharing their stories, and supporting each other in their journey towards improved health.
Throughout the documentary, we witness the patients going through the physical and emotional challenges that come with the weight loss surgery journey, including the immediate effects of the procedure, such as the pain, nausea, and vomiting.
The patients must also follow strict diets, exercise regimes, and lifestyle changes to ensure long-term success, which proves to be strenuous and sometimes frustrating. We see how each patient reacts differently to these challenges, and how their pre-surgery lives influence their outcomes.
The documentary also dives into the controversy surrounding the clinic's practices, and how lower-income Americans are forced to travel to Mexico to undergo these risky surgeries due to the prohibitive costs of weight loss surgery in the US.
All of Me ultimately depicts the human side of obesity, and the struggles that come with the life-altering surgery required to address it. It shows the importance of empathy, community, and the value of shared experiences that can give one the strength to overcome hurdles and lead a better life.
