In season 2, episode 55 of Judge Faith, titled "Bogus House," the honorable Judge Faith Jenkins presides over a case involving a young couple and their landlord. The couple had signed a lease for what they believed to be a starter home, but instead, they were scammed and given a rundown, uninhabitable property.
As the couple explains their situation to Judge Faith, they reveal that they had been searching for a place to start their new family. They had met their landlord through a mutual friend and thought they had hit the jackpot when the landlord offered them a lease for what appeared to be a gorgeous new home.
However, when the couple arrived to move in, they were shocked to find a completely different property. The house was practically falling apart; the roof was leaking, the walls were covered in mold, and the floors were so weak in some areas that they couldn't even walk on them. It was clear that the property was not livable.
When the couple confronted their landlord about the condition of the house, the landlord brushed it off and said that the problems weren't that big of a deal, and that they could fix the house up themselves. The couple tried to make some repairs, but after a while, they realized that it was way too costly, and it wouldn't be a safe place for their future child.
The couple tried to get out of their lease, but their landlord wouldn't budge. They tried everything, including contacting local law enforcement, but no one could help them. That's when they decided to take their case to Judge Faith to try and get some justice.
During the trial, it is revealed that the landlord had actually been running a scam on several couples in the area. He would show them gorgeous-looking properties and have them sign leases without ever letting them see the actual homes they had leased. Once the couples realized what had happened, the landlord would refuse to let them out of their lease and essentially extort them for far more than the value of the property.
As Judge Faith listened to both sides of the case, it became apparent that the landlord was a con artist, preying on hopeful couples just trying to start their families. After hearing all the evidence presented, Judge Faith finally delivers her verdict, but not without a few choice words directed at the landlord.
The episode serves as a cautionary tale to renters to do their research before signing any contracts. Judge Faith also reminds us that while moving into a new home can be exciting, it's essential to assess the property's condition and only enter into leases or purchase agreements that are fair, safe, and honest.
