In the distant future, humans have abandoned the earth and are living in gigantic spaceships called "seed ships". These ships are used to search for a new habitable planet and the only hope for humanity. The show Knights of Sidonia is set in the year 3394 and follows the journey of Nagate Tanikaze, a young man who has been living in the underground tunnels of Sidonia since birth.
In the first episode titled Commencement, Nagate is discovered by the Sidonia's defense screen while on a scavenging mission and brought to the surface. The defense screen detects him because he's a direct descendant of legendary pilot, Captain Ochiai, who died hundreds of years ago during the last battle against the Gauna, alien creatures that have been attacking humanity since they left earth.
Upon reaching the surface, Nagate learns that the seed ship Sidonia is under attack by the Gauna and he must learn to fight in order to protect the ship. He is trained by Yuhata Midorikawa and the other pilots to operate a mecha called a Gardes, which is used to fight the Gauna. In the beginning, Nagate's training is rough and he struggles to keep up with the other pilots. But his determination to protect the Sidonia drives him to train harder.
As Nagate progresses through his training, he meets Izana Shinatose, a third-gendered person who becomes his friend and potential love interest. The relationship between Nagate and Izana is complicated, with Izana not understanding her feelings for him. Over the course of the episode, the two bond over training and conversations about their lives in the underground tunnels.
The episode also introduces other major characters such as Captain Kobayashi, who is in charge of Sidonia's defense, and Lala Hiyama, who is the head engineer responsible for designing and building the Gardes mecha. The characters are all unique and bring their own perspectives to the story.
The episode ends with the announcement of a new mission to attack the Gauna's core and hopefully defeat them once and for all. Nagate, Izana, and the other pilots are sent on the mission, which turns out to be much more difficult than anticipated. The episode ends on a cliffhanger as the team faces a seemingly insurmountable challenge.
In conclusion, Knights of Sidonia season 1 episode 1 titled Commencement sets up the story for an epic sci-fi adventure with a focus on character development and action-packed battles. The unique setting of a seed ship and the ongoing threat of the Gauna provide a fascinating backdrop for the characters to explore as they work toward a common goal of protecting humanity. The episode leaves the audience wanting more and eager to see what will happen next.
