Full Metal Alchemist is one of the most popular anime, or Japanese animation, shows ever created. It follows the story of two young brothers named Edward and Alphonse Elric. The brothers have been learning the important and historic art of alchemy since they were young children. Alchemy allows the boys to turn one object into another. Mostly, they enjoy challenging themselves and having fun with the creative process. However, when their mother dies suddenly, Edward and Alphonse decide to use alchemy to bring her back from the dead. Bringing a person back from the dead is extremely taboo. The boys find out why it is considered taboo when their plan fails. Instead of their mother, the boys bring a horrible monster to life. In addition, the law of alchemy states that in order to create, something of equal value must be lost. Holding to this rule, the attempt to bring their mother back results in the loss of Edward's leg. Alphonse loses his entire body, and is only saved when Edward gives up his arm in order to alchemically bind Alphonse's soul to a suit of armor. The boys are heartbroken that they were not able to bring their mother back to life. However, their childhood friend, Winry, helps them get back on their feet. She is an auto mail engineer, which means that she can fit Edward with a robotic arm and leg that work almost as well as his true limbs. After time for recovery the brothers, who are now in their teens, set off a quest to find the secret to the philosopher's stone. This legendary item may be the key to returning their bodies to their proper states. In order to learn more about the philosopher's stone and alchemy in general, the Elric brothers join the military. Edward becomes a state alchemist, which means that he has access to military alchemical secrets. As the two boys learn more about alchemy and travel in their roles as military personnel, they uncover political plots and turmoil within their country. They also learn more about the dark side of alchemy.
