In the fourth episode of Knights of Sidonia season 1, entitled "Sacrifices," the stakes are raised as the Gauna attack becomes even more relentless. The crew of the Sidonia must make difficult decisions about who lives and who dies in order to protect the ship and its inhabitants.
As the episode begins, the Sidonia is attacked by a new type of Gauna, one that is able to generate a powerful EMP (electromagnetic pulse) that disables the ship's systems. The crew scrambles to come up with a way to fight back, but their efforts are hampered by the fact that the only pilots who are able to use the new Guardian units are still in training.
Meanwhile, Captain Kobayashi reveals that the ship's population has dwindled to only 461 survivors, and that they no longer have enough resources to continue producing food for everyone. As a result, she decides to implement a lottery system to determine which crew members will be allowed to eat.
Tensions are high as the lottery is carried out, and some crew members are outraged when they are not selected. However, just as the lottery is concluded, the Sidonia comes under attack again. This time, the Gauna have infiltrated the ship and are attacking from within.
The crew is forced to make some difficult decisions about who to save and who to sacrifice in order to stop the Gauna from destroying the ship. Some crew members are sent on suicide missions in order to distract the Gauna long enough for the others to get to safety.
As the battle rages on, some of the Sidonia's top pilots are pitted against the Gauna in a desperate attempt to save the ship. The new Guardian units prove to be incredibly powerful, but they are also extremely dangerous to use. One pilot in particular, Tsugumori, is pushed to his limits as he battles against a powerful Gauna.
Ultimately, the episode ends on a cliffhanger as the crew of the Sidonia is forced to make one final sacrifice in order to protect the ship and its inhabitants from the Gauna threat.
Overall, "Sacrifices" is a tense and action-packed episode that showcases the difficult choices that must be made in times of war. It also highlights the personal sacrifices that individual crew members must make in order to ensure the survival of the group as a whole.
