Don Draper, the Creative Director at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, is going through a mid-life crisis, and his behavior is starting to worry his colleagues. In episode 8 of season 4, titled "The Summer Man," we see Don trying his best to change his ways and improve himself.

The episode opens with Don waking up early and starting his day with a run. He also starts keeping a journal, where he writes down his thoughts and goals. Don is trying to quit smoking and drinking, and also wants to better his physical and mental health. He confides in Peggy, his protégé, about his desire to make a fresh start.

Meanwhile, a new copywriter, Joey, joins the firm and immediately causes a stir by making crude and sexist remarks about Joan, the office manager. Joan, who has been having marital issues, is in no mood to tolerate such behavior and confronts Joey. She demands an apology, but Joey refuses to apologize, and instead, makes another offensive remark. This results in Joan slapping him across the face.

Don is not happy with the way Joey has been behaving and tells him to apologize to Joan. Joey, still unwilling to apologize, is fired from the firm by Lane, the managing partner.

As the episode progresses, we see Don struggling to keep up with his new routine. He meets with Betty, his ex-wife, to talk about their children, and ends up drinking and smoking with her. He also tries to avoid Sylvia, the wife of a client, who seems to be attracted to him. However, he eventually gives in to his desires and has a brief affair with her.

Don's behavior worries Peggy, who starts to see him as a mentor and a father figure. She confronts him about his fling with Sylvia and advises him to stay away from her. Don dismisses Peggy's concerns and tells her that he knows what he is doing.

As the episode comes to a close, we see Don sitting alone, staring at the ocean. He tears up his journal, indicating that he has given up on his quest for self-improvement.

"The Summer Man" is a poignant episode that explores the theme of change and transformation. Don's journey to better himself is an attempt to find meaning and purpose in his life. However, he is unable to overcome his demons, and his affair with Sylvia is a symbol of his inherent flaws. The episode also highlights the challenges faced by women in the workplace, and how Joan's strength and determination make her a role model for all women. Overall, "The Summer Man" is a well-written and well-executed episode that showcases the complexity and nuance of human relationships.
